As a retired care home manager of 37 yrs, supporting people living in the community and unable to access help, is a crucial element of her value base.
We provide a modern, non-invasive earwax removal, either in a clinic setting or a home visit for people unable to travel. Our flexible appointment times make it easy to fit your hearing health into your busy schedule.
Why does earwax build up?
Earwax is naturally produced in the ear, as a form of protection by way of keeping the ear canal lubricated and trapping dirt. For many people, earwax will naturally disperse.
There are many reasons for ear wax to build up. This might include the glands producing more secretions than usual, increased skin shedding or the tiny hairs within the ear trapping the exit of the earwax in the normal way.
The shape of our ear canals vary considerably, which may hinder the natural exit of ear wax, even with lubrication.
Age, the use of hearing aids, music ear buds or sleep ear buds are also considered factors that may influence the build-up of wax, and its natural exit from the ears.
Attempts to clean your ear with cotton buds or other implements could potentially increase the risk of pushing the ear wax further into the inner ear, introduce infection and possible damage your ear drum.

Book a home visit!
Home visits can be flexible, and designed to support those people who are house bound.
Karen charges 50p per mile extra for home visits, as round trip mileage and travel time must be taken into consideration.

How do I know if I may have a build up of wax?
- Earache, pain and discomfort may alert you, as may a reduction in general hearing.
- Your voice may sound different to you and the sounds of eating and drinking may be more loud than usual.
- You may feel light headed, your balance may not feel right or your next of kin has noticed that your cognitive ability is not as sharp as it normally is.
- You may have had a fall which is unexplained. The pressure in your inner ear may be effected by the build-up of ear wax, all of which contributes to these potential side effects.
How do we remove the ear wax?
We use the latest otoscope technology to review and photograph inside your ear, so that you can see exactly what’s happening.
We take a photograph at the start of the consultation and following ear wax removal. Should we detect anything of concern, we will supply you with the photographs to take to your GP so that they can take any necessary action.
This can considerably speed up diagnosis and referral, as they have the photographic evidence to hand.
Depending of what we find inside your ear, we can use one or more of these techniques:

Microsuction
Microsuction is designed to safely and comfortably remove wax from ear canal via a low pressure pump, attached to a fine, sterile probe, to gently suck the ear wax from the ear canal.
This method is used initially and is our preferred method of removing earwax, however the approach may require a combination of techniques, depending on the ear wax texture and shape of ear canal.
Karen explains everything as she works and shows you progress on the camara.

Water irrigation
Warm water irrigation, via a gentle, controlled low pressure water jet, angled gently towards the wall of the ear canal.
It can be helpful when coaxing very deep and difficult to reach ear wax forward.
Karen assesses the situation and discusses the options, before proceeding.
One alternative would be to return at a later date, having continued with lubrication.

Manual Removal
Under the steady hands of the clinician and with the aid of a specula, we can use a variety of sterile tools to remove stubborn, hard to remove blockages, perhaps due to the shape of the ear canal.
Should Karen be unsuccessful, she will invite you to go home and continue lubricating your ears.
You will be supplied with a date to return to complete the procedure, free of charge.
What do I need to do before my appointment?
We will ask you to complete a consent form that will supply us with the information we need to ensure that you have a safe and successful visit.
"Before we start the treatment, its important that we know about any medical conditions, medications or ear related complications"
Please purchase, on line or over the counter a medical grade OLIVE OIL SPRAY which is the best and most gentle way to lubricate the ears in advance of treatment. We ask that you do not use any of the abrasive 'express' solutions on the market, as they may make your condition worse.
Sodium Bicarbonate Spray is an excellent option for extremely hard, old ear wax.
Use one drop in each ear, three times a day for at least five days before your treatment date.
Do you have ear hair? If I can’t actually see clearly into your ear, treatment may be delayed. Please visit your barber beforehand.

"Karen visited my father at home.
He lives alone with dementia and I help. He couldn't hear anything. Karen took the time to make a connection with him, before starting.
He was like a new man afterwards.
He could hear, his balance and cognition improved. We had assumed the issues were part of his dementia.
So pleased we contacted Karen

I contacted Karen to visit me at home. I couldn't get out to purchase the spray, so she popped it in and explained how to use it.
When she removed the earwax from my ears, and then she offered to check my husbands ears for free. I was glad of that as he seemed so deaf. His ears were full of earwax! She returned and did them too. I liked that she was respectful of our home, putting everything back to how it was.
Great service!"

FAQs
Here is a collection of answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.
What is microsuction and how does it differ from ear irrigation?
Microsuction is a modern earwax removal technique that uses gentle suction to safely clear earwax, distinguishing it from traditional ear irrigation, which involves flushing the ear with water. At Clarity Earwax Removal, we prioritize your comfort and hearing health, offering microsuction services, alongside complimentary techniques, to reach the desired outcome
Can you remove ear wax if I have a perforated eardrum?
At Clarity Earwax Removal, we prioritize your safety and hearing health. If you have a perforated eardrum, its important we know when this happened, as we can tailor the techniques to your needs (if its appropriate to proceed) Sometimes people have a damaged eardrum and are not aware of it. This is why we proceed with caution and keep checking as we work.
Are there any risks associated with ear wax removal?
The consent form prompts answers to questions that may indicate an associated risk. You are asked to read the consent form carefully (which outlines the potential risks) While the techniques we use are non-invasive and effective, risks such as minor discomfort, temporary dizziness, or infection can arise. Our equipment is sanitised and single use. Meticulous care to indicators before and during treatment reduces the risk wherever possible.
How often should I get my ears checked for wax build-up?
Karen offers free each health checks at her clinics and promotes their use to check progress every six months, especially if you’re prone to wax build-up. Post treatment, you will be supplied some foam ear plugs to use when bathing and an after care sheet, answering many frequently asked questions.
Karen also suggests a maintenance plan, post treatment, to ensure ear canal health going forward.
Are there any risks associated with ear wax removal?
While earwax removal is generally safe, there are risks to consider, such as irritation, infection, or damage to the ear canal or eardrum if not performed correctly. At Clarity Earwax Removal, we utilize modern, non-invasive techniques to minimize these risks and ensure a safe, effective, and supportive experience for all our clients.
What should I do if I experience discomfort during the procedure?
If you experience discomfort during your earwax removal procedure at Clarity Earwax Removal, please inform your practitioner immediately. Your comfort and safety are our top priorities. We will adjust our techniques accordingly, ensuring a seamless experience while optimizing your hearing with care and professionalism.
Do you offer hearing tests to assess the impact of ear wax build-up on my hearing?
No we only remove ear wax. Should we discover any concerns, we will supply photographs for you to seek advise via your GP.
We support clients before they have a hearing test or hearing aid review, by checking their ear canals and removing the ear wax if necessary. It saves your time and theirs.
What are the signs that my ear wax is causing hearing loss?
Signs that earwax may be causing hearing loss include a persistent feeling of fullness in the ear, muffled hearing, and ringing noises. We suggest you use spray and not drops. The modern sprays have the one dose pre set, so you will not 'drown' the ears and make the ears even more uncomfortable.
Pull your ear lobe back and put the nozzle into the ear canal, as far as is comfortable. Press the spray dispenser once.
Application at mealtimes may be helpful as it helps you remember to apply the lubricant and your masticating, which helps work its magic!
